Social Creatures

Throughout our lives, we encounter countless individuals. Some are colleagues, some are classmates, and even those we pass by on the street, however briefly, represent a form of human interaction.

As social beings, we are inherently designed to thrive in groups and communities, a trait rooted in our DNA for thousands of years. Early humans didn’t hunt alone; it was likely safer to do so in groups. For as long as we’ve existed, humans have relied on one another to some degree. Yet today, it seems more common for people to openly express their dislike for others. I’ve found myself saying the same, which may reflect the profound changes humanity has undergone over the centuries. We appear to have grown more narcissistic, more focused on our own needs for identity and validation, often at the expense of nurturing meaningful relationships, leading to increased isolation and intolerance. The rise of technology and social media has further diminished our drive to connect in person.

Despite this, I still believe in the power of human connections. Meeting new people, forging friendships, and cultivating a sense of belonging bring me immense joy. The thought that a simple smile from me could brighten someone’s day, or a light-hearted joke could alleviate someone’s burden, alongside having a friend to confide in during difficult times, makes life feel a bit more manageable.

As a society, we have endured significant challenges—world wars, pandemics, and economic downturns, to name just a few. However, a recurring theme in our history is that we faced these trials together, supporting one another as communities. Whether we acknowledge it or not, we truly need each other to thrive. I believe that deep down, everyone seeks some form of companionship, be it romantic or platonic, as most of us are reluctant to embrace loneliness. Even as we may instinctively prioritize ourselves, history consistently reminds us that unity is our greatest strength.
