Have you ever listened to a song that made you feel more heard than you ever had before? Or read a book that allowed you to transport to an alternate universe when you needed to escape from the world? Have you ever watched a movie that gave you the chance to switch off when you needed rest the most?
One of my favourite feelings in the world is when I buy a new book, I start reading, and the next thing I know is I’ve been gone for hours because I get so immersed in the story it feels almost like an out-of-body experience. Finding a song that I end up listening to on repeat because I feel like someone else understands what I’m going through makes me so grateful for those out there who chose music as their line of work, putting so much effort and passion into it that it can come across like they’re talking directly to me.
To the people working in the creative industry, hats off to you. The occasional lack of inspiration, the time invested to get a project done so that the world can enjoy it, and overcoming all obstacles that stand in the way take a lot of strength. The dedication and discipline of these artists fascinate me beyond measure. And to think that we live in an age where we’re only a click away to access their work. I feel that sometimes we don’t even realise how lucky and privileged we are.
Next time you listen to a piece of music, read a book, or watch a film, I encourage you to take a moment to recognise and acknowledge how fortunate you are. Fully emerge yourself in the experience and appreciate the gift that you are given.
